P24 – Research Point: Van Gogh

Van Gogh’s ‘Field of grass with a round clipped shrub’ (1888) uses pencil, pen and brown ink. The marks include:

Shorter, curving/fanning lines for the deciduous trees and round bush

Short cross-hatching for the longer bushes and curly lines for other small bushes

Longer thicker lines for tree trunks and the over-head branch. The latter also has some shorter curved lines to show the form of principal branches.

Longer, vertical lines for grass with small circles for pebbles etc

Longer, diagonal lines for the evergreen
